Why Altreno Is One of My Favorite Tretinoin Products for Aging Skin

If you ask a dermatologist to name one skincare ingredient they would want on a desert island, tretinoin would probably be near the top of the list. Tretinoin has been used in dermatology for decades, and it remains one of our most trusted prescription ingredients for improving the appearance of sun-damaged and aging skin.
The problem? Traditional tretinoin creams and gels can sometimes leave your skin feeling dry, flaky, red, or irritated. That’s one of the reasons I really like Altreno Lotion 0.05%. Altreno gives you prescription-strength tretinoin in a lightweight, moisturizing lotion that many patients find much easier—and much nicer—to use.
First, what does Tretinoin actually do for your skin?
Think of tretinoin as a long-term investment in your skin. As we age, our skin naturally changes. Collagen production slows, cell turnover becomes less efficient, and years of sun exposure begin to show up as fine lines, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, and dullness. With consistent use, tretinoin can help soften the appearance of fine lines, improve uneven pigmentation and sun damage, smooth rough skin texture, and improve the overall appearance of photoaged skin. Prescription tretinoin has been extensively studied for its effects on photoaged skin, including changes related to collagen within the skin. That's a big reason dermatologists have loved tretinoin for so many years.
So what makes Altreno different?
Here's the interesting part: Altreno is tretinoin. Altreno contains prescription tretinoin 0.05%. The big difference is the formulation. Traditional generic tretinoin usually comes as a cream or gel. These products can work beautifully, but some patients struggle with dryness, peeling, redness, or irritation—especially when they first start using them. Altreno puts tretinoin into an elegant lotion formulation containing moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin and sodium hyaluronate. The result is a lightweight lotion that spreads easily and feels more like a modern skincare product than an old-fashioned prescription cream.
The Best Tretinoin Is the One You'll Actually Use
When it comes to tretinoin, consistency is much more important than having the strongest or most aggressive product you can tolerate for a few nights. I would much rather have you comfortably use your tretinoin consistently than apply something that makes your skin so irritated that you give up after two weeks. That's where I think Altreno really shines. Many patients simply enjoy using the lotion formulation more than traditional tretinoin creams or gels. And when a product feels good on your skin and fits easily into your nighttime routine, you're much more likely to stick with it.
Beautiful skin is a long game. Tretinoin isn't a quick fix. The goal is gradual improvement in the appearance and quality of your skin over months and years.
Is Altreno “better” than generic tretinoin?
Generic tretinoin is an excellent medication, and if you're using it consistently and your skin loves it, there may be y no reason to change. But if your generic tretinoin leaves you dry, flaky, irritated—or you simply don't like the way the cream or gel feels—Altreno may be a better fit for you. You're still getting tretinoin. You're just getting it in a formulation that I find more cosmetically elegant and that many patients find easier to incorporate into their skincare routine. For anti-aging skincare, where we want you using tretinoin for the long haul, that can be a very meaningful difference.
How do I use Altreno?
Apply a pea sized amount using your fingertips to the entire face. You can start out every other night and increase to nightly as tolerated after one week. Feel free to use a moisturizer under it or over it.
And Here's the Really Nice Part: It's $45 in Our Office
One of the downsides of newer brand-name prescription products is that they can be expensive. We've tried to make Altreno much more accessible.
Our office sells Altreno for $45.00
That's $10 less than the $55 Amazon Pharmacy price we've seen for the comparable product. So if you've been interested in upgrading from traditional generic tretinoin—or you've wanted to try tretinoin but have been worried about dryness and irritation—ask us about Altreno at your next visit.
Your skin doesn't need to peel to know your tretinoin is working.
If you've tried tretinoin before and thought, “My skin just can't handle this,” it may not mean tretinoin isn't for you. Sometimes we simply need a better formulation, a slower introduction, or a skincare routine designed around it. Ask us about Altreno at your next appointment. We're happy to help you decide whether it's a good fit for your skin.
