Skincare for Millennials – Skin Aging Prevention Tips

One of the most common questions I get is “at what age should I think about skincare?” Tweakments, as I like to call them, can really be beneficial and may prevent needing more invasive procedures down the road. Preventative skin care is actually the easiest way to look and feel your best. Below you will find some helpful tips to start a strong foundation to anti-aging.

Cleanse Your Skin to Keep it Looking its Best

This might seem like a no-brainer, but developing a good routine of washing your skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day can make a big difference. Removing impurities, dead skin cells, and makeup can prevent your pores from being clogged; often leading to acne. If you want to take it further, a Clarisonic brush can be used to remove dirt and dead skin cells six times better than washing with hands alone.

Pro tip: compliment your daily skincare routine with a dermaplane treatment to treat dry, flaky skin.

Protect Your Skin

Perhaps one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself is to start thinking of sunscreen as a daily part of your routine. Sunscreen should be used year-round to keep skin healthy and prevent skin cancer and aging. You are exposed to sunlight even when driving your car.

  1. Apply sunscreen in the summer

  2. Apply sunscreen in the fall

  3. Apply sunscreen in the spring

  4. Apply sunscreen in the winter

  5. You get the gist. Protect that skin!

Pro tip: We love our elta MD sunscreen, which offers broad spectrum protection, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB exposure.

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau Treatments

Small amounts of these injectables can actually work wonders for keeping your youthful, glowing skin intact. Starting early can prevent wrinkles and sagging skin later on.

Pro tip: Make sure you are having your treatments done by a board certified dermatologist or Dermatology NP/PA. Understanding the anatomy of the musculature beneath the skin is critical in achieving the best results.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels offer corrective benefits that gently remove the top layer of your skin to improve texture and tone. Chemical peels can also correct skin discoloration and reduce the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and fine lines.

Pro tip: Not all chemical peels are equal. There are a variety of different chemical peels that can be used for different skin issues. Talk with your aesthetician about your concerns so you can choose the right one for you.

Add a Retinoid/retinol

When it comes to anti-aging, there really isn’t anything better to give you a youthful appearance. Retinoic acid, which is what retinols are converted into, works to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation, and help skin stay hydrated and glowing.

Pro tip: We love our Avene Retrinal. It is a cosmetically elegant and easy to tolerate retinol.

Great Skincare Habits Start Early

You don’t need an overly complicated regimen to help prevent aging. Starting a skincare regimen in your twenties or thirties can set you up for success down the road. It is much easier to prevent fine lines and wrinkles than it is to correct.
