GLP-1 Weight Loss Medication

What is GLP-1 and semaglutide?

Semaglutide (the active ingredient in drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic) is a modified molecule that mimics peptides that our bodies make naturally, called a GLP-1 analog.

It works by increasing insulin production and lowering glucagon secretion. It also targets areas in the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. As a result, semaglutide delays how quickly our

stomachs digest food, leading to a feeling of fullness and satisfaction with smaller meal sizes.

GLP-1 analogs also lower our intestinal motility so we feel fuller longer after meals. Lastly, it stimulates insulin secretion by the pancreas as well as lowering blood sugars, in by reducing the production of sugar in the liver.

What are the benefits of GLP-1 weight loss medication?

  • Decreased appetite and cravings

  • Weight loss

  • Improved blood glucose control

Who cannot take GLP-1s? (contraindications)

  • If a patient or any of their family members have been diagnosed with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2) or Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC), they should not take semaglutide

  • Patients who may be diabetic and already on a GLP-1 medication

  • Type-1 diabetics

  • If you have ever had pancreatitis, consult with your medical provider as using semaglutide can increase the risk of developing pancreatitis.

Who is a candidate?

Our medical providers will determine if you are a good candidate for weight loss medications. We'll check things like height, weight, blood pressure and your body mass index. We'll also order baseline labs to ensure you're in good health before beginning.

Height, weight, BP, and BMI will be checked

Every patient will have a personalized dose titration schedule, based on the lowest effective dose. Starting at a low dose is an effective way to limit side effects and improve adherence to the medication.

How do I get started with GLP-1s?

We recommend having this treatment closely managed by a medical professional. Here at Northeast Dermatology, our nurse practitioner, Torrie, has extensive experience administering and overseeing management of patients on semaglutide.
