Kybella® is injected into the fat under the chin and works to gradually dissolve the fat. Kybella® may be given as a series of injections at least one month apart. Our physicians will decide how many treatments and injections are needed. There are alternative treatments to Kybella® that are non-surgical and surgical. The non-surgical alternatives consist of topical neck products and weight loss. The surgical alternatives of Kybella® are a neck lift, neck liposuction, Coolsculpting®, and several others. Risks and potential complications are associated with alternative forms of treatment.

The Procedure

During treatment with Kybella®, a series of injections will be performed through the skin and into the fat of the area beneath the chin. Mild discomfort or a stinging sensation is possible, but temporary. The treatment only takes a few minutes. The area will likely become a little swollen, possibly bruised, and numb. Bruising resolves quickly, but the numbness and swelling may last for a few weeks. These effects will gradually resolve. The fat gradually disappears, and the area of treatment tends to look less full and more firm afterwards.

Side Effects

Any potential side effects usually tend to be minor, such as numbness, bruising, or swelling, and tend to resolve within hours or days. Rarely, damage to a nerve could result if treatment is performed outside of the recommended area, which resolves usually within weeks. You may wish to discuss any concerns you have for potential side effects with you doctor prior to receiving treatment.
